Drawing Aesop's Fables

Location:
Second Chance School of Assos Lecheon, Greece

Facilitators: Maria Karakatsani, Eirini Sofianou, Kalliopi Kechrologou, Evangellos Kapinias,  Hraklis Anagnostopoulos, staff members and facilitators of the Second Chance School Assos - Lecheon, Greece.

A number of short drawing workshops were organised for adult learners to engage the local community with the Second Chance School and to produce a large-scale mural. Two of Aesop's fables were chosen to work with:

  • The north wind and the sun
  • The two cocks and the eagle

Staff members explained the myths to all of the participants, who then made drawings of what they wanted to paint on the walls.

Participants learned to draw and paint on a wall, in several cases as a team. They used acrylic/plastic and enamel paint, along with empty plastic bottles.

The adult learners and the local people, aided by the facilitators, prepared for painting the murals by cleaning the surrounding area and whitewashing the walls.

The participants painted on the walls as if they were large canvases. These pictures formed a gift to the high school children that the Second Chance School shares the school building with.

All participants responded in a very positive manner – even those who had had a few initial misgivings. They liked the originality and freshness of the project and they were glad to see that they were not excluded from learning.
