A Day In The Life Of A Piece Of Paper
Apsley Paper Trail
Mavis Penn, Artist in Residence
Supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund
Frogmore Paper Mill has an important history - here in 1803 paper's industrial revolution began with the first commercial Fourdrinier paper machine.
Part of the mill site has been restored, thanks to a recent Heritage Lottery Fund grant, and this event was linked to the educational programme, which raises awareness of its heritage and current role as a re-cycled papermaker.
With help from an enthusiastic team, resident artist Mavis arranged three timed activities to explore and exploit the Mill’s natural and man-made assets:
- sketching water, movement, flora and fauna while cruising on the River Gade and Grand Union Canal
- life drawing
- drawing the mill's machinery
Participants also drew with light, using found materials and an overhead projector, and made their own take-away colourful mono prints. They discovered the pleasures both of drawing and making their own paper.
Barbara Whatmore Charitable Trust Awards
The Barbara Whatmore Charitable Trust aims to increase public appreciation of the arts and music. Their awards recognise educators, artists, teachers and others who use The Big Draw to extend their audience’s perception of drawing and to engage them in innovative activities. They reward organisers whose events relate to their setting, local environment or community, show a clear purpose and good results. Individual drawings may have been used to create a collective artwork, or a public display to celebrate participants’ achievements.
