Drawing From The Past

Award:
Society of Architectural Illustration Award 2009
Location:
Newark Town Hall

Patty Temple, Curator of Newark Town Hall Museum and Art Gallery

Artist: Elaine Guilding

Supported by Renaissance East Midlands (MLA) and museum volunteers

During half term, local and visiting families were invited to enter and explore this landmark Grade 1 listed Town Hall, designed in 1776 by John Carr of York.

Free drawing materials and accessible artistic advice, easels from the local college, refreshments and helpful volunteer guides created an enjoyable and positive atmosphere.

160 people, some of them first-time visitors, were encouraged to join in, sketching details of the Ballroom, Council Room and the view of Market Place from the balcony.

Their drawings were displayed in the Assembly Rooms, and later in the Gallery.

Society of Architectural Illustration Award

The Society of Architectural Illustration (SAI) aims to promote public knowledge of architectural illustration and to interpret architecture for the public benefit.

This award recognises events that encourage direct illustration of the built environment, historic or contemporary, and raise awareness and understanding of local buildings and their impact on townscapes, or rural life.
