Heads, Homes And Heights

For their fourth Big Draw, the Southwell group of artists ran a non-stop eight-hour drawing day – on a tiny budget. With boundless enthusiasm, imagination and energy they involved 700 visitors in an extensive programme.
Activities included a mural of cut-out self-portraits, drawings of My Home on a large wall-map of the town, a Draw a Head patchwork screen, and an imposing two-storey Tower of Babel constructed from words and pictures connected to politics.
Visitors made animals to fill a cardboard Noah’s Ark, and drew on a mural inspired by the vivid carvings in the Chapter House.
The Dean, Canons and Vergers played an important role, as did children from four local schools, whose paintings of heads and homes were projected on a large screen throughout the day.
Barbara Whatmore Charitable Trust Awards
The Barbara Whatmore Charitable Trust aims to increase public appreciation of the arts and music. Their awards recognise educators, artists, teachers and others who use The Big Draw to extend their audience’s perception of drawing and to engage them in innovative activities. They reward organisers whose events relate to their setting, local environment or community, show a clear purpose and good results. Individual drawings may have been used to create a collective artwork, or a public display to celebrate participants’ achievements.
