The Gallery becomes the canvas

Vibrant and engaging activities brought the Gallery’s grand historic structure to life and made the community welcome.  City residents and visitors were invited to use the fabric of the building in unusual and exciting ways – whether chalking on huge blackboards in the portico, constructing a road system across the main gallery floor, or projecting their drawings onto its neo-classical walls. The exhibition area provided the perfect platform for a weekend of unrestricted creative freedom. As evidence of its popularity, people of all ages stayed for hours and were reluctant to leave. An abundance of monochromatic materials were put to good use by families who discovered that creative activities can transform the personality of an institution.

Barbara Whatmore Charitable Trust Awards

The Barbara Whatmore Charitable Trust aims to increase public appreciation of the arts and music. Their awards recognise educators, artists, teachers and others who use The Big Draw to extend their audience’s perception of drawing and to engage them in innovative activities. They reward organisers whose events relate to their setting, local environment or community, show a clear purpose and good results. Individual drawings may have been used to create a collective artwork, or a public display to celebrate participants’ achievements.
