The Journey

Location:

Teacher: Tim Boardman

Arts Award Winner 2008

This event was a major part of two students' Silver Arts Award. Jackie and Claire led the activity - with obvious delight - for fellow students from Leeds Hospital and Home Teaching Service.

Participants were invited to chart a memorable journey or dream in rough outline. Then they added interesting encounters and landmarks along the journey. Finally, taking a bird's eye view of their sketch and travelling along its path, they made larger A2 drawings, filling the sheet.

Aboriginals draw like this to remember the important paths they take in life and the students researched aboriginal sand and bark drawings.

To link the journey's four sites, Tim walked his own journey, with water trickling from a trundle wheel, to make a drawing connecting Grafton to Leeds General Infirmary, St James and Little Woodhouse Hall.

The Arts Award scheme offers students ways of expressing themselves beyond the curriculum. It develops confidence and self-esteem, and supports learning in all subjects.
