Writing On The Wall
The Big Draw 2010:
- exploring the coastal environment through beachcombing and observational drawing
- attracting a younger audience to Fleetwood Marine Hall with graffiti arts workshops
Around 80 young people and their families joined us for ‘Writing on the wall’ on a sunny Saturday under the colonnades at Fleetwood Marine Hall.
The main reason for the event was to attract a new audience to the Marine Hall and engage young people with the Sea Change programme. The programme, funded by CABE, will rebuild the sea defences at Fleetwood, build a marine observatory, create an outdoor performance area and revitalise the Marine Hall - an Art Deco building.
First up: beachcombing with a local artist and the coastal ranger
We discussed the coastal environment and selected some interesting and curious natural finds. Then everybody crowded around a long table to take part in observational drawing exercises, using pencils and pens to study and capture their finds.
Next: Over to the team of graffiti artists
With the team’s help the young people transferred their designs to one of nine 8ft x 4ft boards.
Children as young as five wielded spray cans with flair. The results were fantastic, bright and bold and will be perfect for decorating the hall for future youth events.
