Drawing Marathon

Location:
National Art Museum of Moldova

Organiser: Natalia Lozinschi, Chief of Public Relations, National Art Museum Moldova

In 2009, the National Art Museum of Moldova held their first ever Big Draw. The aim of this 'Drawing Marathon' was to attract new audiences to the museum, particularly those who would not normally walk through its doors. For museum staff, it was an opportunity to offer the local community a totally new, and definitely unusual, activity that had never been tried before.

The Drawing Marathon’s theme was ‘Drawing around the world’. Visitors were able to take part in activities throughout the museum, using chalks, markers and felt tip pens. Working on different surfaces, participants created colourful murals, exciting pavement art, innovative graffiti and individual drawings of various media and sizes. Members of museum staff were supported on the day by volunteers from the State University of Moldova Psychology Department and event costs were met through sponsorship from local institutions and businesses.

Despite being first time Big Draw organisers, the National Art Museum of Moldova's Drawing Marathon was a resounding success. Organiser Natalia Lozinschi comments:

“We tried something new and we saw that our participants liked it. It was very important for us to see the sparkling eyes of the children and their smiles when they were invited to draw. It was challenging to see the mistrustful eyes of adults when we asked them to draw, but their inspired and lighted faces afterwards were a reward for us as we saw that our efforts were not in vain.”
